Waimangu Volcanic Valley

Formed in 1886 during the Tarawera Eruption, the Waimangu Volcanic Valley stands as one of Aotearoa's oldest and most iconic visitor attractions. In light of the Whakaari event, the approach to assessing geothermal hazards at tourist sites has been thoroughly reconsidered. Beyond its geothermal and geological challenges, Waimangu operates a complex system that includes coach transfers, a surveyed vessel, a café, a visitor centre, regular track and road maintenance, and hosting tens of thousands of visitors from both New Zealand and overseas each year.

The Duke of Marlborough

The 'Duke' is New Zealand’s first licensed hotel operating since 1827…. Legally since 1840.

We were fairly confident in our safety system but felt there would be opportunities for improvement. We’re focused on delivering amazing experiences  and wanted to ensure our health and safety system meets the same high standard we have for the other aspects of our business. We have many moving parts with accommodation, two restaurants and bars on opposite sides of the harbour, a gym, maintenance team and a vessel. We were looking for an advisor who would really understand our business. We felt Andy would be a great fit with his tourism background. Andy, worked with our team leaders and staff to carry out a thorough risk analysis, reviewed controls and looked at our emergency procedures. There were a number of opportunities for improvement, but it also gave us reassurance we were on the right path. Andy implemented an App based system which means all of our teams are now connected and we can easily see the health and safety activity across all aspects of our business.

Marina Cove

Feeling completely overwhelmed and confused, I reached out to Andy to ask for his expert advice on how we could improve our health and safety procedures. Andy took me through a step by step process to help me to understand how to identify risks and introduce a safety management system that works for our small owner/operator tourism business. After a few hours spent with Andy, I was able to implement a simple, workable process and create a template which is now an important part of the daily operation of the business. Spending time with Andy is definitely one of the best investments we have made for our business!

Rotorua Canopy Tours

“As one of New Zealand’s leading Tourism Operators, health and safety is a critical element of our operation. Despite undertaking a number of external audits, I felt our safety system could be better. Andy took the time to really dissect it and gave us some really valuable feedback. We re-developed our SMP based on Andy’s feedback and we now have something which we feel is exceptional.”
